The highly contagious Delta Variant contributed to the surge in infection with the virus spreading rapidly as the daily infections were below 2,000 initially but as of a week ago, the cases have increased to 5,000 on Thursday and 7,000 on Tuesday.
The cumulative total cases in Japan today has reached nearly 900,000.
According to the Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases, it is said that the Delta variant is responsible for about 70 percent of infections in the metropolitan area.
Aside from that, as the Olympics are contributing to the rise of Covid-19 cases, organisers have pledged to implement adequate Covid-19 measures for safety.
However, the Prime Minister confirmed that there is no need to worry as people are expected to move around less as there will be no spectators at almost all venues.
The head of the national institute, Takaji Wakita, warned at a press conference on Wednesday that the current spread of infections is something they have never experienced before.
The government will hold a meeting as early as Friday to decide on putting districts under emergency.
