The Goonies crew reunited in Washington, D.C. on April 5 for a special panel at Awesome Con ahead of the beloved film’s 40th anniversary this June. Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green, Robert Davi, and Joe Pantoliano were all present for the “Hey You Guys! The Goonies Reunion,” where they shared fun anecdotes and debunked one of the longest-standing myths about the film.

During the panel, Astin addressed the persistent rumor that the child stars saw One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship for the first time while filming and that their reactions were genuine. He was quick to set the record straight, saying, "I was sort of offended that they had that idea, that they wouldn’t let the kids see the pirate ship, so that they could capture their real reaction. Like, what? We don’t know how to do real? We did real reactions all the time."
Astin continued, explaining that he had actually seen the pirate ship before filming, but chose to act in a way that made it look like the cast's reactions were authentic, keeping the myth alive for decades. "I wanted to perform in a way that really made them think that they had captured the honest reactions," he said.
Feldman added his own memories from the set, mentioning the "coolest thing" about filming: the heated pool used for the iconic water scenes. "The water that we were in, all the way from the ship to the waterslide — get this — was heated," he recalled with enthusiasm. "That was badass."

The cast also reminisced about their time together, noting that they’ve recently had more opportunities to reconnect. Feldman, Green, and others attended a hand and footprint ceremony for Ke Huy Quan in February, while Feldman, Cohen, and Green were at the premiere of Astin and Quan’s movie Love Hurts later in the evening.
Despite the passing of time, the Goonies are still hopeful for a sequel. Feldman expressed excitement about Steven Spielberg’s renewed interest in the franchise, adding, "We hope that everybody has a great adventure. Keep the adventure alive." Plimpton echoed his sentiment, saying, "I think [fans are] going to see The Goonies 2, whether we're in it or not. I think that’s pretty obvious."
As the reunion came to an end, the cast left fans with a sense of nostalgia, as well as the hope that the Goonies' adventure is far from over.
