Amelia Earhart is known for two things – her solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean—making her the first female pilot to do so—and her mysterious disappearance on a round-the-world flight in 1937.

Her disappearance mystifies people to this very day. There are many theories as to why she vanished, from a simple plane crash to a much stranger theory that has been gaining prominence lately.
In 1940, a British colonial officer discovered the remains of a skeleton with measurements that “matched the late Amelia Earhart” on the Kiribatese island of Nikumaroro. The island is also home to something else – coconut crabs.

These giant, powerful crabs are named for their ability to snap coconuts in half with just their claws. After a recent video on YouTube of a coconut crab killing a bird, the theory states that like the bird, Amelia Earhart may have fallen victim to Nikumaroro’s large population of coconut crabs, leading to the remains that were discovered.
As of yet, this theory has not been proven, and on the face of it, it sounds downright bizarre. But, you never know – stranger things have happened!
