Parents Can Open Social Media Accounts For Kids

Parents can still open social media accounts for their children under the new social media restrictions for under-16s. 

However, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil says strict parental controls must be put in place. 

He adds that on principal, the government is not restricting children from accessing social media content, especially those that are educational. 

Its primary aim is to protect children from harmful strangers. 

He highlighted a recent case in Sabah, in which a man was jailed for sexually abusing a teenager he befriended on social media.

In a separate development, the government spokesperson says the RM1 interbank fee waiver for ATM’s only applies to cash machines owned by banks.

He clarified that privately-operated ATM’s – which make up about 16 percent of machines nationwide – will continue imposing the fee.

The government is looking at how to use AI to improve the efficiency of teams handling the removal of harmful content online.

This, after revealing that the MCMC spent more than 19 years worth of man hours to identify and remove more than 345 thousand pieces of such content between January and July.
