Should Govt Seize Vehicles Involved In DUIs?

A road safety activist is urging the government to permanently seize vehicles involved in DUI cases, especially those resulting in death or serious injury.

He says if authorities can forfeit commercial lorries for carrying excess loads, it only makes sense to impose the same punishment towards drunk drivers.

Under the proposed law, seized vehicles will be auctioned...with proceeds split between a victim compensation fund and road safety initiatives to ensure effectiveness.

A similar measure was implemented in Latvia, which saw a drop in repeat offences after confiscating more than two thousand vehicles in DUI cases over three years.

In a related development, the driver involved in the crash that killed a man in Klang could be facing the death penalty or up to 40-years imprisonment.

This, after he was charged in the magistrates’ court this morning with murder.

No plea was recorded, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Meanwhile, the suspect also pleaded guilty to consuming dangerous drugs...which carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment and a fine.

Also, the Attorney-General’s Chambers says new legal measures may be required to address fatal drunk-driving cases.

This, amid calls for harsher penalties, following the recent case.

The Attorney General told NST that any proposals or recommendations about tougher punishment should be submitted to the relevant ministry.
