It was reported that Japan is considering offering free COVID-19 vaccines to all residents.
Elderly, health care workers and those who are at high risk of developing severe symptoms will be prioritized for the vaccination.
The full cost of this immunization will be paid for from the national budget.
Japan’s Health Minister, Katsunobu Kato said that the government is in talks on how the country can create a necessary system to administer the vaccines. He added that Japan will join an international framework, which is co-led by the Worlld Organization.
Vaccines for COVID-19 are still under development and the government of Japan are in negotiations with several pharmaceutical companies, including US-based Pfizer.
The Japanese government aims to secure enough vaccines by the first half of 2021, especially since the Olympics is scheduled then.
It was also reported that Japan will not only create the framework for vaccination but also to prepare proper relief measures for those suffering from the side effects of the vaccine.
Vaccines against the virus are now in the development phase in several countries, and some are already in the clinical trial stages.
