Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that durian is a huge part of life in Malaysia and Southeast Asia in general. And it’s all thanks to this adorable creature that we still have durian today.

we may not have durians if not for these adorable animals

The flying fox is known as the king of bats, and it’s one of the reasons we have the king of fruits today. PhD student Sheema Abdul Aziz captured the following footage while studying flying foxes in Tioman Island.

The video shows a flying fox drinking nectar from a durian flower. In doing so, it pollinates the flowers, allowing them to become fruits.

Other animals do this too, but the flying fox is one of the main pollinators of durian flowers. Sadly, their population is declining due to the destruction of their natural habitat, as well as people killing them for various reasons.

So if we want more durians in the future, we should protect the flying foxes!
