The Department of Environment has imposed a nationwide ban on open burning, except for cremation, religious purposes, barbecue and flaring until the end of the southwest monsoon.

Director-general of the department, Norlin Jaafar said offenders could be fined up to RM500,000, or even sentenced to a jail term up to 5 years, or both.

A maximum compound fine of RM2,000 can also be imposed for every offence committed.

If you witness any open burning, you can help extinguish small fires and report any open burning to the Department of Environment or the Fire and Rescue Department.

You can contact the DOE at 03-88891972 or 1-800-88-2727 and the Fire and Rescue Department at 999 to report cases of open burning.
