The air quality in certain areas of Penang has reached unhealthy levels for the first time, since the haze hit Malaysia a week ago.

The API readings in Batu Uban reached 103 as of 5pm yesterday (11 September 2019).

In Balik Pulau, the API readings spiked to 137 on Thursday (12 September).

The Penang state government has directed schools and sports organisations to halt all outdoor activities amid the haze.

Kindergarten operator Mazlina Merican told The Star, that close to half of her pupils were absent each day due to the haze.

Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow said that the mechanism to ensure public awareness regarding the haze will be activated once the API has reached alarming levels.

State health committee chairman, Dr Afif Bahardin said that there are no restrictions on outdoor activities among the public, including school children and fishermen.
