Today is International Women’s Day! But how much do you know about this special day and how can you participate in it? Here are some of the things you need to know about the day which honours extraordinary women who make a difference in the world.
International Women’s Day has been around for a long time
Although it was made into a formal celebration by the United Nations in 1975, various individual nations have been celebrating it for decades before that. The first official event took place in 1909 in New York, and quickly popularized throughout Europe. It’s popularity continued to spread to over 100 countries and its legacy continues till today.
It’s all about equality
It’s a day of global celebration, to acknowledge the cultural, political, social and economic accomplishments of women from around the world. Besides that, it’s also a day to express support for gender equality for women everywhere.
This year’s campaign theme: #BalanceforBetter
Its aim is to build a gender-balanced world. The IWD official website quotes, ‘The race is on for the gender-balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth, and gender-balanced sports coverage’. Its core message emphasizes the importance of gender balance to ensure thriving communities and economies.
Play your part
Make your support for the cause known by heading to social media and posting about the achievements of the women in your life (Nicol David, Yasmin Ahmad, even your mum!). Take it a step further and organise a fun gathering with your girlfriends and share ways you plan on encouraging and supporting the women around you throughout the year. If you’re a guy, why not let the special women in your life know how much you appreciate them?
