Known as the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day, ‘Chap Goh Mei’ also marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebration. It is tradition for young singletons to write their names and contact details on Mandarin oranges and toss them into the river, hoping that a person of the opposite sex would scoop them up and make contact.

However, single ladies today are no longer following the standard ritual, as they now include their Instagram account handles instead on the festive fruit. In a survey conducted by International dating application SweetRing on 550 application users, results showed that 79% of single women will only include their Instagram account names on the Mandarin oranges.

Women are apparently more uncomfortable taking calls from unknown numbers, as opposed to having others reach them via their social media. Moreover, single men think that guys will take the initiative to contact women via their Instagram accounts compared to phone numbers.
