Ditch the fruit juice and stir-fry veggies, and go raw instead.

According to a study by University of Otago in New Zealand, raw fruits and vegetables may be better for mental health as opposed to cooked ones. The reason behind this is simple—fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients before cooking, and those nutrients may positively impact mood and brain chemistry.

Participants who participated in the research displayed less depressive symptoms, and a more positive mood after consuming raw fruits and veggies. Those who consumed processed and cooked food on the other hand, enjoyed significantly fewer health benefits.

“This research is vital. Lifestyle approaches such as dietary change may provide a safe approach to improving mental health,” Dr Tamlin Conner, who is the lead author of the research, explained.

Of course, not everything should be consumed raw. Some of the raw foods that can contribute to better mental health are: carrots, bananas, apples, dark leafy greens, grapefruit, lettuce, citrus fruits, fresh berries, cucumber and kiwi. Just make sure you wash them before eating!
