26% of Malaysian youth suicidal about their jobs

Jul 13, 2016

Over 26% of Malaysian youth feel suicidal about their jobs, while 33% hate their jobs.

This is based on an online survey asking over 15,000 youth about their attitudes towards their jobs.

Meanwhile, only about 14% either love or like their jobs.

According to David Fernandez, a psychologist with over 20 years of experience, this will affect employers in the long run, as the productivity of a person who loves their job outweighs one who doesn’t.

He also said if employers paid more attention to the statistics at hand it would be a great help in tackling the worryingly high levels of suicide in Malaysia. It is currently the 2nd leading cause of death among Malaysian youth.

Mr Fernandez added that multiple case studies show that the root cause of depression in around a third of people, is their hatred towards their jobs.

Asim Qureshi, CEO of SkootJobs.com, the company that carried out the survey, said he is a little shocked by the statistics.

He added that though things are improving, this survey shows that there is still a long way to go.

"What I can say is that we’re seeing employers working much harder now than a few years ago to sell themselves to employees we can see that in the quality of ads they post as they’re realising that if they want to build the best teams they need to attract the best talent and that hard work presumably extends to retaining talent too.”

This survey was carried out by SkootJobs.com, involving over 15,000 18-35-year-olds.
