Parenting is tough. In many ways, it’s a job in itself – a 24/7 job with no breaks and no pay. But to parents, the huge smiles and gleeful laughter of their little ones is more than enough as payment.

And then, puberty hits. All of a sudden, your happy, energetic child becomes a sulky, sullen teenager who seems to want less and less to do with you every day.

It can be disheartening for parents to experience, but this change is natural; the child is simply evolving, and parenting strategies must evolve to match. So, if you’re a parent raising a troubled teen, here are some tips that may help.

#1 Give them space

At this age, many teens are trying to ‘find themselves’, and establish their own identity. Give them the space to do so, as long as they don’t harm themselves along the way.

#2 Tell them the risks

Teenagers need space to grow. That being said, they also need to know the risks associated with certain activities, and parents should be the ones to inform them of the risks.

#3 Give them an escape plan

Despite all the advice, teens may still find themselves in dangerous situations. Help them come up with a way to escape – for example, a code word to text you for help.

#4 Keep the door open

You may want to know all about your teen’s life, but they might not appreciate prying questions. Give them their privacy, but let them know you’re there any time they want to talk.

#5 Be a good role model

Actions speak louder than words, and that applies to parenting, too. Children, regardless of their age, are greatly influenced by their parents’ behaviour, so be careful what you do and say in front of your kids!
