Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) took immediate action to save the natural ecosystem of Malaysia’s second largest freshwater lake, Tasik Chini in Pekan, Pahang.
“All mining activities in Tasik Chini and its surrounding areas will come to a halt,” said Meenakshi Raman, president of SAM.
She also stated that immediate action should be taken to demolish the weir that has affected the natural ecosystem of Tasik Chini.
“Tasik Chini and its surrounding areas should be gazetted as a protected area as it is an environmentally sensitive area,” added Meenakshi.
SAM feared that Tasik Chini’s biosphere reserve status, granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in May 2009, will be jeopardised if the government fails to give its full commitment
In an official statement, the Pahang Department of Environment said that the water quality in Tasik Chini was at a clean level and safe for all life.
The issue related to Tasik Chini went viral on social media recently showing the lake was threatened due to mining activities.
But many parties, including Pekan MP Datuk Seri Najib Razak, claimed the photographs were taken two years ago.
