In case you were trying not to catch up on the news, six states in Malaysia are placed in Movement Control Order (MCO) from today (13 January) until 26 January.

The states include Penang, Selangor, Federal Territories (Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan), Melaka, Johor and Sabah.

Here’s what you need to know about what you can or cannot do during the MCO:

  • Social and major gatherings like weddings, seminars, team sports, religious activities etc. are not allowed.
  • Residents in MCO states are limited to travel within a 10-km radius from their homes and only to get necessities.
  • Only two people per household are allowed to travel in one car.
  • Interstate and inter-district travel is not allowed nationwide.
  • Only students sitting for major exams, especially SPM, Malaysian Vocational Certificate (SVM), Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM), STPM, the Malaysian Higher Religious Certificate (STAM) and Malaysian Vocational Diploma (DVM), are allowed to go to school under strict SOPs.
  • Only emergency cases such as death and cases of natural disasters, after obtaining permission from the police, are allowed for travelling in and out of MCO areas.
  • Disaster relief and humanitarian efforts by NGO must obtain permission from the police. Aids must be channelled through the Disaster Operation Control Centre (PKOB).
  • Restaurants, food stalls, food trucks, hawkers, food courts, roadside food vendors and sundry shops are still allowed to operate from 6 AM to 8 PM.
  • Dining in at restaurants is not allowed. Only take-aways, drive-through and deliveries are allowed.
  • Daily essential shops are allowed to open from 6 AM to 8 PM.
  • Petrol stations are allowed to open 6 AM to 10 PM, except those on highways, they are allowed to be in service for 24-hours.
  • Daily markets and pasar tani are allowed from 7 AM to 2 PM, while wholesale markets are allowed from 12 AM to 6 AM and 11 AM to 4 PM.
  • Laundrettes can operate from 6 AM to 8 PM.
  • Work from home order should be enforced for sectors that are deemed as not essential. The essential economic sectors include manufacturing, construction, services, trade and distribution, and plantation and commodities.

Stay safe, stay at home if you can. If you’re out, please wear a mask and practise good personal hygiene.
