Be it Asia, the Americas, Africa, or Europe, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to travel destinations. Frankly, the amount of options available to us is a bit daunting. But, there is no denying that Switzerland has been – and remains to be – one of the top countries to visit.
If nothing else, just the thought of seeing the Matterhorn mountain in all its splendour is enough of a reason to pack a bag, hop on a plane, and visit the Central European country. But, if you’re not much of a mountain person, then fret not, Switzerland is more than just mountains.
Here are 5 other reasons to visit Switzerland…
#1 The stunning capital, Bern

In what seems like defiance to popular opinion that capital cities must keep up with modern aesthetics, the old-world charm that Bern retains is a refreshing change when it comes to visiting cities.
Modern day comforts are readily available but trips to this UNESCO World Heritage Site is only complete with visits to the gothic-styled Bern Minster cathedral, the city’s 16th century fountains, a 6km shopping arcade, and the Rose Garden.
#2 The pristine lakes

As great as the country’s mountains, their appearance is only made better when reflected on the glass-like surfaces of Switzerland’s many lakes. But, it’s not just a trip to see a body of water. Nay, it’s about being in awe of the serenity of it all.
Imagine taking a stroll down cobblestone streets overlooking crystal clear waters or going on a cruise past lakeshore castles and hillsides adorned with vineyards, that’s exactly what you can do when you visit Lake Geneva, Switzerland’s largest lake.
Other lakes you may want to try to cram into your itinerary includes Lake Lucerne, Lake Lugano, and Lake Thun. With that being said, it’s good to keep in mind that no matter which lake you find yourself at, you’ll be treated to a stunning landscape.
#3 The medieval architectures

We’re still keeping our hopes up for a working time machine to be invented in the near future, but in the meantime, we’re glad that we can count on Switzerland to take us back in time.
From castles to churches to town buildings, Switzerland has medieval architectures in abundance. One such place is dubbed the most popular historic monument in Switzerland, and it’s located on Lake Geneva.
Built to be a Roman outpost, the Chateau de Chillon was subsequently used as a prison before becoming home to exhibitions from the Chillon, Bernese, and Vaudois period that it is today. Did we mention that it looks exactly like the type of castle that inspires fairy tales?

Then there’s Oberhofen Castle, a 13th century castle on Lake Thun that is steeped in rich history. Today, the castle stands as a Swiss heritage site and a museum showcasing the history of its past inhabitants.
Attached to the castle is a 6-acre park dotted with seasonal plants, ornaments, and a hornbeam alcove.
#4 The indoor and outdoor activities

While the country is mostly associated with skiing, there are plenty of other activities that one can indulge in that doesn’t necessarily involve descending a mountain.
The city of Lucerne in Central Switzerland for example, is known for holding the annual International Music Festival. For culture buffs, the Opera House and Grand Théâtre at Lake Geneva stages international acts.
For lovers of art, the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern holds the world’s largest collection of works by artist Paul Klee, while the Museum of Fine Arts Bern, the oldest art museum in Switzerland, holds a collection of over 3,000 paintings and sculptures, and more.
#5 The food

Just like the watches produced in the country, there is plenty of craftsmanship put into the making of Swiss cuisine, and no trip is complete without filling your stomach with some of Switzerland’s finest.

First up is raclette, a dish typically consisting of boiled potatoes, pickles, and onions (sometimes served with ham) covered in layers of melted raclette cheese.

For something resembling more of a snack (but can be added to salad or sandwich), be sure to try bündnerfleisch, a paper-thin smoked dried meat.

Finally, for something sweet, treat your taste buds to something the Swiss call bündner nusstorte, a short crust pastry packed with caramalised nuts.
